Approximately 3.8 million tons per year of European ethylene production capacity (over 15%) has been officially planned to be shut down by 2027 as well as 1.9 million tons of propylene. On January 5, 2026, ExxonMobil's 800,000-ton-per-year ethylene plant in Scotland announced that it would be shut down in February.
