Ruters-The United States, Qatar, Nigeria and Algeria have urged the European Union to revise its upcoming methane emissions rules for imported oil and natural gas.
The rules will require overseas suppliers to provide methane emissions monitoring and verification data. Major LNG exporters have warned that current compliance requirements may be difficult to meet and could disrupt gas supplies to Europe.
Some EU countries, including Italy and Poland, have requested a three-year delay. However, the European Commission has so far resisted reopening the legislation, while indicating that implementation may be adjusted.
The dispute could affect future LNG trade flows, compliance costs and Europe's access to gas from the United States, Qatar and other major suppliers.
