Butanol (BuOH) 71-36-3
CAS No.: 71-36-3
Butanol (BuOH), a four carbon straight chain oxo alcohol, is a medium-boiling liquid that is useful as a chemical intermediate and as a solvent for ambient dry and baking coatings. It is widely used as an etherification alcohol in the manufacture of amino resins that are used as curing agents in baking and physical-drying finishes. Butanol (BuOH) is also a very effective latent solvent for cellulosic lacquers and ambient-cured enamels, reducing formulation viscosity and providing excellent flow and leveling during film formation.
The chemical substances for this product are listed as Inert Ingredients Permitted for Use in Nonfood Use Pesticide Products, and in Food Use Pesticide Products with limitations, under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Product Application
- Manufacturing BA (n-Butyl Acrylate), n-Butyl acetate, DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate).
- Butanol is widely used as a solvent and as an ingredient in various formulations, including cosmetics. It serves as a starting material for the production of other chemicals. In the coatings industry, n-butanol is primarily used as a diluent in cellulose nitrate lacquers, enhancing their flow, gloss, and resistance to blushing. It is suitable as a solvent for acid-curable lacquers and baking finishes derived from urea, melamine, or phenolic resins, where it is often combined with glycol ethers or ethanol.
- Butanol has a variety of other applications, including:
A solvent for dyes in printing inks and other products.
An additive in polishes, cleaners, and stain removers.
A swelling agent for textiles.
An extractant in the production of drugs, antibiotics, hormones, vitamins, alkaloids, and camphor.
A solubiliser in the textile industry, used as an additive in spinning baths or as a carrier for colouring plastics.
An additive in de-icing fluids and gasoline to prevent carburettor icing.
Utilised in paper and thin-layer chromatography.
A humectant for cellulose nitrate.
A feedstock for the production of glycol ethers.
A starting material for various butyl monocarboxylates, widely used as solvents.
A feedstock for the production of flotation aids.

Storage & Handling
General Information: This product should be stored, handled and used in accordance with good industrial hygiene practices and in conformity with any legal regulation. Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material is handled, stored and processed. Wash hands, forearms and face thoroughly after handling chemical products, before eating, smoking and using the lavatory and at the end of the working period. Promptly remove any clothing that becomes contaminated. Isolate contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. DO NOT take working clothes home.
Storage: NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. Prevent generation of mists! Above 36℃ use a closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical (ventilating, lighting and material handling) equipment. Store in an original container or an approved alternative made from a compatible material. Keep container tightly closed and sealed when not in use. Containers that have been opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Store only if stabilized. Keep in the dark. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances (see section 10), any sources of ignition or heat (e.g. open flames, sparks, direct sunlight, smoking, hot surfaces), food, drink and feedstuffs. Inspect regularly for deficiencies such as damage or leaks. Treat carefully, avoid physical damage to containers. The storage area should be equipped with the corresponding species and quantity of fire equipment and leakage emergency equipment. Use appropriate
